    Kansalaistori is a new square and lawn area in the heart of the city located between the Music Centre and Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma along Mannerheimintie. The square is partially paved and in the summertime popular especially among skateboarders. The area has plenty of benches to sit and relax and watch all the activity around. The artificial turf playground located in the area provides a possibility for different kinds of sports activies, e.g. basketball, and there's a paved bicycle route running through the area.

    The part between the Sörnäinen Harbour area and the coal plant is being turned into a new seaside residential and workplace district accommodating 18,000 residents and 10,000 office workers called Kalasatama. The construction of residential buildings started in 2011 and the first buildings are already completed. The entire construction will be completed by the early 2030s.

    A new central library was built next to the Kansalaistori Square and opened in December 2018. The building hosts not only a library, but also eg. studios, space for workshops and events, restaurant, cafe and a cinema. In the second-floor urban workshop you can try out 3D printing and scanning, explore hobby crafts and sewing, build things or make modifications and repairs to existing ones. A wide range of tools, such as a laser cutter, sticker printer, heat press, sewing machines, overlock sewing machines, embroidery machines and badge machines can be borrowed.
